República Oriental del Uruguay
Uruguay is a state in
South America which is bounded in the north by Brazil, in the east by the
Atlantic Ocean, by the River Plate in the south and Argentina in the west.
Wine industry in our country dates back to remote times but it was not until
the creation of our state in 1830 that viticulture found a favorable surrounding
for expansion.
Around 1870 the industry developed, with the introduction of the French grapevines
Tannat, called Harriague, and Folle Noir, called Vidiela, to honour those
who brought these varieties to our land.
The development of this sector of industry laid the groundwork for the enforcement
of the first winemaking Act in 1903. In 1904, quality controls, data processing
and production surveys were implemented. (source: INAVI)
In 1987 the National Board of Winemaking is created (I.NA.VI), and this institution
gives impulse to the process of renewal of the winemaking sector, making it
possible for this sector to enter the world of competition and international
quality of wine.
In 2000, the Wines of Uruguay Exporters’ Association, which is devoted
to the expansion of Uruguayan wines in the foreign market, is created.
